Master of Science in Technology Specializing in
Construction Management (updated 1-30-2009)
The Master of Science Degree with an emphasis in
Construction Management is designed for CM graduates or experienced construction
managers who would like to either teach construction management at the college
or university level or focus on research relating to the construction industry.
This degree can be completed in one calendar year (3
semesters); however there is a maximum time limit of three years from first
enrollment to degree completion.
Degree
requirements include 24 hours of course work and 6 hours of thesis (see below).
Entrance
Requirements: The application deadline for admission into the program is
February 15th. Students admitted to the
degree program begin studies in the fall semester. Applicants are required to have a minimum 3.0
or higher GPA in undergraduate work and a score above the 55th percentile in
each area of the GMAT exam. For international students, a minimum score of 570
on the TOEFL is required.
Fall Semester
Courses:
CM 545 -- Construction Finance (3 hours). Prerequisites: Bus M 300, CM 445; or instructors
consent. Advanced construction finance
topics, including financial statements, cost control, insurance and bonding,
project evaluation, project financing, and cash management.
CM 600 -- Trends and Issues in Managing Construction (3
hours). Current trends and issues in the
management of both domestic and international construction projects. Political, regulatory, technological,
environmental, and leadership trends and issues.
TECH 638 -- Technology Leadership (3 hours). Strategic planning and policy
development. Theoretical and practical
leadership aspects of conceptual and implementation processes. Articulation and team building among various
organizations. Ethics and conflict resolution. Developing and implementing solutions to special problems; advanced skills/concepts in traditional and
emerging technology areas.
Winter Semester
Courses:
TECH 601 -- Research and Development in Technology (3
hours). Success strategies in graduate programs. Identifying appropriate direction of research and study. Research tools as aids in decision making: strategies, literature,
logic, survey techniques, research design, statistics, computers. Preparing proposals for research papers and
thesis research; organizing first three thesis chapters.
CM 626 -- Real Estate Development (3 hours).Prerequisite: CM 545. Advanced topics in real estate development,
including land acquisition, entitlement, land planning, and project feasibility analyses.
CM 650 -- Construction Company Development and Strategic Planning
(3 hours). Advanced topics in construction company operations and management, including strategic planning
processes, company growth and development, systems management, and performance analyses.
TECH 699R Masters Thesis (0.5 - 9 hours). A research thesis addressing issues in the
construction industry.
Elective Courses (may be taken at any time they are available)
Students will choose elective courses (6 hours) from Business Management, Public Administration, or other programs as approved by
the students graduate committee.
